GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's wrestling had three wrestlers ranked in the Top 20 of their weight class in the latest
NAIA National Poll that was released Thursday.
Jordan Komac was ranked 4
th in the 165 lb. weight class,
Hayden Schrull was ranked 11
th in the 184 lb. weight class, and
Eli Walston was ranked 18
th in the 125 lb. weight class.
"We lean on those guys all the time," head coach
Steve Komac said. "They're great workers, they're great leaders, they do the right things."
As a team, the Argos received votes in the poll, missing the Top 20 by two spots. Though he has some veterans to lean on, his team is comprised of mostly underclassmen; over 20 wrestlers on the team are freshman and sophomores.
"Without any real competition yet, I don't think we can expect our young guys to get noticed to the degree that we think they're capable of," Komac said. "I definitely think we're going to rise in those polls once we get out and start traveling. We're eagerly looking forward to that first competition."
The team, which has only been practicing since December, had an
intra-squad scrimmage on Monday. Komac used the scrimmage to simulate what a match environment will look like without fans.
The Argos will kick off their season next Wednesday, Jan. 13, with a road match against conference rival #17 Montana State-Northern. Last season, the Argos defeated the Lights in both duals they competed in.
"I'm almost not sure what to expect other than going to the ground roots of our belief, and that's just effort," Komac said. "It's the first outing of the year. A lot of programs we've been competing with have been training since September and October and we started three weeks ago. If the effort is right, everything else will get better and I think we'll be very competitive."
