KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Providence women's basketball team is receiving votes in the first iteration of the
NAIA National Poll.
The Argos received a total of 58 votes, placing them at 28
th in the country. They are 50 points behind Taylor (Ind.), the 25
th ranked team.
"We're excited to be receiving votes," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "The fact that we get that respect nationally is a good sign. We still have to go out and win games, that's the big thing. We're going to play a tough schedule and are going to put ourselves in position to be in that Top 25. You can't ask for anymore than that."
The Argos are one of three teams in the Frontier Conference that are in the poll. Preseason favorite Carroll College is ranked #7 while Montana Western is #21. Southeastern,
who defeated the Argos in the first game of the season, are ranked #5.
"The Frontier is one of the toughest conferences in the country," Himmelberg said. "If you don't schedule tough, you're not going to be prepared for conference. If you want to be one of the best teams in the country you have to put yourselves in position to play top teams in the country. It'll give us a good measuring stick of where we're at and ensure that we improve throughout the entire year."
The team is in the middle of a four-game road trip. After
taking down Embry-Riddle on Monday, the team will look to make it two straight tonight against Arizona Christian. The team will then travel to California to take on San Diego Christian and St. Katherine's.
"Everything remains the same for us," Himmelberg said. "We're going to try and win the Frontier Conference and make a big splash at the National Tournament. We think we have a lot of talent on our team, we just have to make sure we win games and put ourselves in a position where we can make a run at the end of the year."
