WHITEFISH, Mont. – After earning back to back straight set victories last week, two University of Providence volleyball players were named the Erck Hotels Frontier Conference Players of the Week on Monday.
Sacha Legros was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while
Jenna Thorne was named the Attacker of the Week. McKenna Kaelber of Montana Tech was named the Setter of the Week.
"I'm excited for them," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "They work really hard. They have been playing well all year but have been starting to play really well and take it to a new level now that we're in conference. Those two are definitely deserving."
This is the first time Legros has won the award this season, and the sixth time that she has won it in her career. Legros had a dominant defensive performance last week, recording a total of 52 digs, good for 8.67 digs per set. She is currently
eighth in the nation in digs per set (5.87). She also recorded six service aces, all of them coming against MSU-Northern on Wednesday.
"She's the heart and soul of our defense," Duda said. "With her, if she misses a single ball she's questioning why she didn't get it. She just has a great mindset week in and week out and is well-deserving of this award."
This is the second time Thorne has won the Attacker of the Week honor this season; she previously
earned the recognition on Sept. 6 after recording a
career-high 28 kills against Concordia. Thorne led the team in kills in both games this week, earning 10 kills against the Skylights and 12 kills against Montana Western. For the week, she averaged 3.67 kills per set on a .375 hitting percentage.
"She just keeps getting better week by week," Duda said. "Her hitting percentage was great this weekend. Even when there are a couple blockers on her she's finding a way to put the ball away. She's starting to transition better and do some nice things."
The two awards makes it four players who have been named the conference player of the week this season.
Cydney Finberg-Roberts has won the Setter of the Week award four times this year while
Sadie Lott has won the award twice. Duda believes the team's commitment to getting everyone involved is the reason for multiple players receiving awards.
"We want to move the ball around, we want to spread the ball out," Duda said. "It all starts with the pass and the set obviously. We have to do those two things well and Sacha and Fin are two of the best at it. That allows our hitters to do a good job of putting the ball away."
The Argos (16-2, 3-0) will look to make it ten straight on Wednesday with a road trip against Carroll before returning home on Saturday for a game against Rocky Mountain College.
