CORVALLIS, Ore. – University of Providence women's wrestler
Ashley Gooman was the named the Cascade Collegiate Conference WVT Laboratory Women's Wrestler of the Week, the conference
announced on Monday.
Gooman, who
is currently ranked 5th nationally in her weight class, had a dominant season debut,
winning the 116 lb. weight class at the Maverick Open in Grand Junction, Colo. She defeated two wrestlers from Colorado Mesa, a NCAA Division II school, and one from Fresno State. She met Jasmin Soc-Lopez (OUAZ) in the final, defeating her handily. Of her four matches, she recorded one pin and three technical falls.
"She was super dominant in the tournament," Atwood said. "She didn't really have a close match. The Colorado Mesa girl she wrestled was a tough opponent to get in the first round and Ashley didn't have any trouble with her at all. Everything that we've been working on she did perfectly. There's still a couple of things that we need to work on to continue to get better but overall I'm super pleased with her performance."
Atwood is hoping for a big year from Gooman, who has been super motivated over the summer. She didn't get to compete last year because of transfer rules, and didn't get to compete at the National Tournament the year before because of the pandemic.
"She's on a mission this year," Atwood said. "She's a super hard worker, 4.0 pre-med student who is already accepted into med school as a junior. She's a heck of an athlete and does all the right things on and off the mat. She's everything that a coach would want in an athlete."
Gooman and the team have a big week coming up, as they'll compete in the two-day Missouri Valley Open, one of the biggest tournaments of the season, this weekend.
