Avila Named CCC Wrestler of the Week

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – University of Providence men's wrestler Joel Avila has been named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Men's Wrestler of the Week.

This is the second straight a men's wrestler from the University of Providence has won the award; Eli Walston received it last week.

"His athletic ability is great," head coach Steve Komac said. "His offense is fantastic. He's been doing a really nice job of opening up and letting his abilities show. The more he opens up the better he looks."

Avila, who is ranked 20th nationally in the 125 lb. weight class, wrestled two opponents last Thursday during the Argos' dual against Northwest and Montana State-Northern. In the first match of the day against Northwest's Sterling Quinin, Avila won 15-3 via major decision. He followed that up with another 15-3 victory against the Lights' Kaleb Frank.

"He's been wrestling at a very high level this season," Komac said. "We definitely think he's one of the top guys in the country. He has goals to win a National Title and I think that's within his abilities. He's still getting better all the time. We're pretty excited about him getting recognized. We're excited about how his future is going and his future with us."
