Legros Named NAIA National Defender of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A great week for University of Providence volleyball player Sacha Legros just keeps getting better.

A day after being named the Frontier Conference Defender of the Week for the third time this season, Legros was named the NAIA Defender of the Week on Tuesday by the NAIA.

On Friday, Legros recorded her 1,000 dig as an Argo while aiding the team to a victory over the top team in the conference, Rocky Mountain, and was a big part of the team's win on Saturday to take over the top spot in the conference. Her performance over the weekend vaulted her into the top spot in the nation in digs per set at 7.4

"It's all just perfect timing," head coach Arunas Duda said. "She's just a kid who is all over the court. She's so involved in everything we do defensively. And she hates to lose. She's a big part of what we've been doing this year."

In the past couple of games, the coaching staff has noticed that opposing teams have begun to do their best to hit away from Legros. Those teams are finding that's easier said than done.

"Even if the ball isn't in her zone she's running across the court to get balls," Duda said. "She's taken a lot of responsibility for defense. She does a little bit of everything. I know teams are hitting away from her on purpose and she still finds a way to go and get it. She makes herself the middle of every play. She's everywhere."

Her 1,000 dig accomplishment is impressive for a multitude of reason, but mainly because she played half a season as an outside hitter last season, her first with the Argos. Add on a shortened season this year without any preseason games, and the number is even more staggering.

For this year's campaign, Legros is first in the nation in digs per set (7.4) and 14th in total digs (434). She's also contributed 34 assists and 14 service aces on the season. Clearly effective on the court, the coaching staff is also pleased with her leadership ability.

"She brings a ton of energy and passion," Duda said. "She just refuses to lose. These aren't digs that are just up, they're timely digs. She's putting us in system with the way that she handles some of her defensive plays. She's a gritty and fiery defender that just won't quit. She's awesome."

Legros will next take the court on Friday for the beginner of her team's double-header against Montana Tech. The two teams will square off on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
