EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team picked up their first two wins of the season on Friday, defeating Bushnell in both double-headers. The Argos (2-8, 2-6) defeated the Beacons (2-18, 0-8) 7-4 in the first game and 9-5 in the second game.
"They were playing together as a unit today," head coach
Joey Egan said. "We had better plate approaches, much better plate approaches. We had very few strikeouts, so we were putting the ball in play. We came out early and were focused on hitting the ball a lot better than they have been."
In the first game,
Taylor Mathews got the Argos on board first with an RBI single. The Argos broke free in the fourth inning, scoring a total of six runs.
Jaelena Trujillo,
Ashlee Anderson and
Taylor Mathews all brought runners home, followed by a three-run homerun from Peyton Elliot.
The Beacons got on the board first in the second game, scoring one run off the error. But the Argos pulled away good in the third inning, scoring five runs. After scoring one run off an error, Peyton Elliot scored three runs on a double and
McKenzie Staats brought home another run with a double herself.
The Argos only used two pitchers between the two games.
McKenna Montgomery started the first game, striking out three batters in six innings. She allowed eight hits and four runs.
KJ Schweikert got the win in the second game, striking out two batters throughout the game. She allowed five runs and six hits.
"To only go through two pitchers is very exciting for us," Egan said. "To have our pitchers stay in the game and not filter through everybody in the very beginning was huge."
The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. MTN.
"We have to keep pushing to get better," Egan said. "The goal tomorrow is to continue to keep scoring and not be satisfied until we score 30 runs."
