GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team played to a second straight draw against Carroll on Monday, this time ending up a scoreless 0-0.
"We played tough," interim head coach
Danny Burstein said. "It was a tough battle. We stepped up and didn't let them have anything. I'm very pleased with the effort."
The chippiness from yesterday's draw carried over into Monday's dual as a total of 42 fouls were called over the course of the match. The Argos committed 18 of those fouls, compared to the Saints' 24.
"We had to be just as physical," Burstein said. "We couldn't back down. We just had to step up and match them at their level."
The Saints (4-2-2) outshot the Argos 20 to six over the course of the game, which played into the strategy of the Argos (3-1-2). The team was prepared to sit back defensively and play a ground game and combat the aerial assault that the Saints like to use.
"We put a lot of preparation into making sure that we know what they're going to do," Burstein said. "From a tactical stand point, we were right there. Each individual player found it within themselves to come out and give everything they have. The guys left everything on the field today."
The day also served as senior night for the four seniors in the program who are planning to move on following the season –
George Almeida,
Andrew Davey,
Daniel Huseby and
Will Velasquez.
"Some of these guys have been here all four years," Burstein said. "They've gone through a lot, especially this year. I'm very happy that we got to get on the field for their senior season. They performed admirably as a group. I couldn't be more happy with the performances they've put in this year and what they've done for the program."
The Argos will conclude the regular season next week at Rocky Mountain College. They'll take on the Battlin' Bears (4-0, 4-0) on April 5 and April 6 at 3 p.m in Billings, Mont.
