Argos Drop Triple Header to Mountaineers

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The University of Providence fell to Eastern Oregon in all three games of the teams' triple header on Friday. The Mountaineers (15-26, 10-14) won the first game 9-1 in six innings, the second 5-4 in eight innings and the third game 10-2 in five innings.

"Today was a tough one," head coach Joey Egan said. "We left so many runs out there in the first game, and then we got our hearts crushed in the second. Three games is a lot in one day, but we definitely had our chances. There were plenty of opportunities."

Despite the lopsided score in the first game, the Argos (4-26, 4-20) did a nice job offensively, generating six hits on the game. However they weren't able to bring those runners home, ultimately leaving eight on base by the end of the game. The Argos lost 9-1.

"We have to be able to bring them home," Egan said. "I thought we played a good game, but you get a lopsided score like that when you don't take advantage of those opportunities."

The Argos responded in the second game, putting together a complete game. Tied at three after seven innings, McKenzie Staats strode across the plate in the top of the eighth off the RBI single from Sam Hernandez, giving the Argos a 4-3 lead. The Argos managed to get two outs with just a runner on first in the bottom of the eighth, but unfortunately walked the next batter. A two-run double from Shelby Starr during the next at-bat sealed the game for the Mountaineers.

The frustration carried over into the third game, where the Argos struggled to get going. They mustered only four hits while allowing seven as the Mountaineers won 10-2.

"That second game took a lot out of us," Egan said. "We have to be a bit more mentally tough to respond. I know we're all hungry. We're excited to get out there and get another run at them tomorrow."

Barring inclement weather, the two teams will play a single game at 12:00 p.m. MTN.
