GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #22 University of Providence women's basketball team will look to continue their winning streak this week with two big road matchups. The Argos (18-3, 5-1) will travel to Havre on Thursday to face MSU-Northern before taking on #25 Montana Western on Saturday in Dillon.
The squad is currently on a nine-game winning streak and is coming off a big week last week when the team
defeated #6 Carroll at home before
beating #15 Rocky Mountain College on the road. The team knows that two wins over ranked opponents last week just made the target on their back that much bigger.
"We just have to come out and focus on each individual game," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "The girls know that in the Frontier, everything is hard. We just have to focus on all the little things. They are focused in. They know what the goal is. They know how short the season is right now."
The team will also have to prepare for two difficult road environments. The Argos have already played in the Armory Gymnasium in Havre,
beating the Lights (7-13, 0-6) 74-48 earlier in the season. Their game against the Bulldogs (12-6, 2-4) will be the first trip down to Dillon for the team this season.
"Playing on the road in this conference is really hard," Himmelberg said. "Every team we play is good. Northern has a good crowd. They're going to be fired up and ready to go. Western is always good at their place. Both teams shoot it better at home than they do on the road. Both games are going to pose a big problem for us. If we don't rebound and defend, things can get away from us really quick."
The Argos have been hot during this winning streak, with
Frontier Conference Player of the Week Emilee Maldonado and r
eturning four-time All-American Parker Esary leading the charge. During this winning streak, Maldonado is averaging 17.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while Esary is averaging 14.0 points per game, 7.1 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
While the Argos know the challenges the two teams present, they're going to be more focused internally.
"We're going to try and take care of ourselves," Himmelberg said. "We have to make sure we execute offensively and follow the defensive gameplan. Taking care of the basketball and making sure we get back in transition is going to be key."
The game against the Lights will tip off at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday while the game against the Bulldogs will begin at 2:00 p.m.
