Great Falls, Mont. - For the third time in four weeks, the University of Providence men's and women's soccer teams are traveling to the west coast for Cascade Conference play. The Argos will face Warner Pacific (Ore.) and Multnomah (Ore.) and for the Providence women, there are postseason ramifications on the line. The Argos are tied with Warner Pacific for the eighth and final playoff spot with seven points apiece. A win on Friday would push the Argos three points in front with just two matches remaining. The Knights are 5-3-2 at home and allow an average of two goals per game. WPU has tallied 18 goals on 79 shots on goal, scoring 1.29 per match. Kaitlin Hirasa leads the team with four goals in 2022 while teammate Maddie Goss has fired 15 SOG (shots on goal). Goalie Katie Pomerinke has started all 14 matches for the Knights and has a save percentage of 71.7 percent with 71 saves.
Providence went 1-1 at home last weekend, scoring three second-half goals to overcome a 2-0 deficit to beat Bushnell before falling 4-0 to Corban. The Argos are led in scoring by Dani Chang and Dani Waialeale who each have five points with two goals and an assist each. Head Coach Heather Blandford says the team is ready to play, "We are back on the road to face another two tough opponents. We need to bring a consistent effort and willingness to compete for a full 90 minutes. We need to eliminate outside distractions and focus on what we can control. If we take ownership in those areas, I have no doubt we are capable of putting in a performance we can be proud of."
Following the ladies Friday, the Argo men look for the first win of the season taking on the 20th ranked Knights. WPU is 14-0 overall, 9-0 in the CCC (Cascade Collegiate Conference) and has clinched a playoff spot. The Knights are 8-0 at home and averaging 3.64 goals per match. They have outscored opponents 51-5 on the season, led by Andrew Martinez who has 22 goals of his own including nine game winners. Alexis Calderilla has a save percentage of 87.2 percent in goal. Argo Head Coach Will Hander says the Argos are looking forward to facing off against the Knights, "This weekend will be a challenge, but it is a challenge our guys are up to. We have done some needed training and are looking forward to seeing how we do against two quality teams."
