GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #16 University of Providence women's basketball team will host #11 Carroll College on Saturday in the semifinals of the Frontier Conference women's basketball postseason tournament. The game will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
The game will serve as a rematch
of last Thursday's thriller, where the Argos (25-5, 12-3) took down the Fighting Saints (24-6, 11-4) 93-92 in double overtime. The game, which was sealed by two game-winning free throws from
Parker Esary, clinched a share of the Frontier Conference regular season championship for the squad, their first since the 1980-81 season.
"We're really excited for Saturday night and we're really excited that it's at home," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "That was a big victory for us on Thursday to get this one at home. We play better here, we shoot it better here and our crowd is unbelievable. The girls are super comfortable here. We're super excited and ready to go."
Thursday's win also secured a first-round bye in the tournament for the Argo squad, while the Saints had to play in the opening round. Carroll defeated MSU-Northern 73-39 in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday.
"They are going to come in guns a blazing," Himmelberg said. "I'm sure they're going to come out right away and try to jump all over us. They're going to make some adjustments, we're going to make some adjustments and we'll see what who can execute and take care of business."
This will be the fourth time that the two teams have played each other in the season. The Argos lead the season series 2-1.
"Everybody knows what everyone is doing at this point in the season," Himmelberg said. "We have a good idea of what they're going to do. It's very seldom at this time of the year that they're going to put in something that we haven't seen at some point during the year. We're sure they'll make some adjustments, but at this point there's no surprises. It'll come down to how we handle things."
The game will be a battle of two-headed monsters. The Saints are led by the dynamic duo of Danielle Wagner (14.7 ppg) and Jamie Pickens (13.2 ppg) while the Argos are led by Esary (15.9 ppg) and
Emilee Maldonado (17.4 ppg) Esary is coming off a career-performance against the Saints, scoring a career-high 39 points en route to being
named the NAIA National Player of the Week.
Despite the star-studded nature of the contest, the coaching staff believes the game will come down to who controls the fundamentals.
"We have to take care of the basketball and rebound," Himmelberg said. "Rebounding is the key. They are a very good rebounding team and we can't let them have a lot of shot attempts and get a bunch of second-chance points. We have to take care of the ball too and not turn it over."
