SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team lost both games of their double-header against Bushnell in the second day of their opening weekend of the 2022 campaign. The Argos (0-4, 0-3) lost to the Beacons (5-5, 3-0) 7-1 in the first game and 14-2 in the second game.
The Beacons came to play in the first game of the day, recording 15 hits which led to seven runs on the day. The Argos only mustered four hits during the game. Down 7-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Jaelena Trujillo singled up the middle to bring
Sam Hernandez home for the lone Argo run.
"Carter pitched a really good game," head coach
Joey Egan said. "She's constantly getting more and more opportunities to pitch really sharp. She pitched good enough to win and we just didn't hit the ball."
The Beacons continued the hot streak in the final game of the series, scoring five runs in the first inning. They scored at least one run every inning, extending the lead to 14-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. After getting on base with a single, Trujillo scored on an error two batters later. Two batters later
Taylor Mathews scored on a pop fly from
Ryen Palmer for the second Argo score of the game.
The squad recorded a total of nine hits between the two games, with Mathews and Trujillo leading the team with two hits a piece. Palmer and
Macy Mangold recorded the lone RBIs for the team.
Carter Thornton returned to the mound in the first game, recording a total of four strikeouts on the day.
The team will hit the road again next weekend with a series against British Columbia in Vancouver. The first double-header will begin at 3:00 p.m. MTN on March 4.
"Because this was our opening weekend this was our first time to see how we played in a game," Egan said. "Today opened up a whole lot that you can't really see when you're just really scrimmaging. There's a lot of fine-tuning to be done with the approaches. We need to make some defensive tweaks so we'll clean that up."
