Argos Fall to Thunderbirds

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The University of Providence softball team lost both games of Friday's doubleheader to the University of British Columbia. The Argos (0-6, 0-5) fell to the Thunderbirds (3-5, 2-3) 2-0 in the first game and 9-0 in the second game.

The Thunderbirds got on the board with a single run in the first inning and extended the lead to two off an Argo error in the second inning. The squad had a chance to get on the board in the top of the third inning, but a base-running error caused an out instead. Neither team could get going offensively, resulting in a 2-0 final score.

"We played good in that first game," head coach Joey Egan said. "We had two errors, with one leading to a run. We had a costly base running error and ran ourselves out of a run."

The Thunderbirds came out strong in the second game, scoring in all but one inning. The Argos only mustered a single hit during the game, getting outhit 7-1 during the contest.

"We're just not putting the ball in play right now," Egan said. "Girls that never strike out are striking out. The more we're losing I think we're pressing to try and get a win. It's an endless cycle that we have to get out of."

Despite the losses, Egan said that in general the pitching improved greatly from last weekend. Carter Thornton got the start in the first game, recording a strikeout and allowing only five hits in six innings. McKenna Montgomery got the start in the second game.

"Our pitching improved a lot from last weekend," Egan said. "We put significantly less people on base. We had lower walks, lower hit batters, lower wild pitches. Our pitching staff did a pretty darn good job."

With the pitching improved, Egan hopes the team picks it up on the offensive end tomorrow.

"We need to string some hits together," she said. "Our pitching made a big improvement from last weekend. Now we just need our offense to put the ball in play."

The Argos will finish the weekend series with a double-header tomorrow. The first game will begin at 12:00 p.m. MTN.
