CORVALLIS, Ore. – After running through the 101 lb. weight class at the Grand View Open this weekend, top-ranked University of Providence women's wrestler
Ivy Navarro was named the WVT Laboratory Cascade Collegiate Conference Women's Wrestler of the Week, the conference
announced on Monday.
Navarro, a senior from Lahaina, Hawaii,
won her weight class at the Grand View Open on Saturday, one of the bigger NAIA tournaments in the nation. Navarro took down the #2, #4 and #6-ranked wrestlers en route to capturing the crown.
"She was extremely dominant as usual," head coach
Matt Atwood said. "She's been working hard all year. She's been learning and improving. She didn't have a tough match all tournament. She's just been dominating this year."
By winning the Grand View Open, Navarro, who has
been ranked #1 in the 101-lb. weight class all season, has now won three tournaments – she previously had won the Battle of the Rockies and the Maverick Open. Navarro is currently 13-1 on the season, with her lone loss occurring to ranked NCAA-wrestler Olivia Shore in the Missouri Valley Open Final.
"She's been deserving of this recognition all season," Atwood said. "Everybody just kind of expects her to win. She has dominated everybody in the country that she needed to to prove that she is number one this weekend. It was awesome."
Atwood said that despite the performance this weekend, Navarro isn't satisfied. She has her sights set on winning the Cascade Collegiate Tournament followed by the NAIA National Tournament.
"As long as we keep her healthy and keep finetuning stuff, she should win the conference," Atwood said. "She's ranked #1 in the country so we're hoping to get a National Championship out of her."
The CCC Tournament will begin Feb. 27 at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls, Mont.
