CALDWELL, Idaho – The University of Providence softball team fell to #6 Southern Oregon in both games of their Saturday doubleheader. The Argos (0-10, 0-8) fell to the Raiders (17-5, 4-1) 9-0 in the first game and 11-0 in the second game. Both games were played in Caldwell, Idaho due to adverse weather conditions in Great Falls.
"Even though the result wasn't what we wanted we can still see a lot of improvement," head coach
Joey Egan. "There's some innings where we look like a really good softball team, but then there's innings where we still have some work to do. We just have to keep striving on improving the little things so that we can put a complete game together."
In the first game of the day the Raiders got off to a hot start, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. After three two scoreless innings, Riley Donovan hit a three-run shot to extend the lead to six. The Raiders weren't done, scoring two more runs to extend the lead to eight.
After stranding a batter in the bottom of the fourth, the Raiders added one more run in the top of the fifth. The Argos failed to generate any offense in the bottom of the fifth inning, finalizing the 9-0 score.
Jaelena Trujillo and
Taylor Mathews led the team with two hits, while
Ryen Palmer added a hit as well.
After taking a 1-0 atop the first innings, the Raiders exploded for five runs in the top of the second to take a 6-0 lead. They added five more over the final two innings to extend the lead to 11-0.
The Argos mustered four hits in the final game with
Alivia Atlee,
Macy Mangold,
McKenzie Staats and
Jaelena Trujillo all putting the ball in play.
The team will play the final two games of the trip on Sunday with another double-header. The first game will begin at 11:00 a.m.
