MISSOULA, Mont. – Two University of Providence track and field athletes qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships this weekend at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula, Mont.
Jillian Sanchez hit the A standard in the hammer throw with a mark of 50.71 meters. Her distance, which is a new Argo program record, was good for a 4
th place finish. Sanchez had previously qualified for the National Championships in the discus throw last weekend.
Tatiana Martinez also qualified for the National Championships in the discus, hitting the B standard with a mark of 43.66 meters. She placed second among the 20 competitors.
"I'm really proud of those two," throws coach
Alan Cress said. "They were extremely composed and it showed today. They did awesome."
Calla Haldorson also had a solid day, setting a personal record in the discus with a mark of 41.23 meters. She finished 6
th in the event.
Allyson Conner and
McKenzie Clark also had noteworthy finishes for the squad. Conner finished 8
th in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.37 meters while Clark finished 8
th in the javelin throw at 40.19 meters.
"Overall we had a great performance today," Cress said. "We're going to continue to finetune our technique so that we're ready to go for the remainder of the season."
The team will compete again next weekend in a meet hosted by Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont. The NAIA National Championships will begin May 25 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
