BROOKINGS, S.D. – Rico Pryor broke the school record in the men's weight throw at the NAIA National Indoor Championships on Friday in Brookings, South Dakota.

Pryor recorded a mark of 16.73 meters during his second throw, finishing 19th out of the 35 total qualifiers in the field. He broke his previous record of 16.48 meters that he set earlier this season.

"Rico went out and got the jump done," throws coach Alan Cress said. "We had two goals going into today. We wanted to break the school record and go for 17 meters. He got 16.73 meters which is the new school record. He finished just short of 17 meters. He made a nice jump in the rankings and got a lot of good experience. He felt really good about it and I felt really good about it. It was a good day for him."

Jillian Sanchez was the other Argo who competed for the squad at the Championships. In her second National appearance, she finished in 18th place with a throw of 15.81 meters in the women's weight throw.

"We wanted to hit that 17 meter mark, we knew that's what it would take to get to the final," Cress said. "The opportunity was there we just couldn't find a groove. That's how major competitions go. She knows she would have been there. Her throw that got her here during the season would have gotten her into the finals. It's a tough deal. You just go and compete to the best of your ability on that day and let the chips fall where they are."

Cress was specifically pleased with how the two conducted themselves during the event.

"They represented our program in an excellent way," he said. "It was great to have two throwers at the National Indoor Championships. It's just proof that the program is building. They did well and represented us well. They got our name out there."

The two competitions wrap up the indoor season for the Argos, who will now shift their complete focus to the outdoor season, which will kick off March 19 with a meet in Billings, Mont.
