WICHITA, Kan. –
KC Buday finished in 7
th place in the heavyweight division at the NAIA National Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
The tournament wraps up the season for Buday, who finished 32-11 on the year.
"KC had a fantastic year," head coach
Steve Komac said. "There were only a couple kids that we felt like we're able to stay up in the lineup all season. He had one of the highest match counts on the season. He's consistent in the lineup week in and week out. It's a great ending to a great season."
Buday, who
earned All-American status last night, lost his first match of the day to #4 Aaron Johnson (Cumberlands) sending him to the seventh place match. There he won via medical forfeit over #6 Joshua Isaac (Missouri Valley) to finish in 7
th place.
"We wrestled one of the higher-ranked opponents to start today," Komac said. "He's been ranked in the Top 4 all season. He was athletic and explosive. We had a good game plan for the match but late in the period he made some explosive shots. We don't see kids very often that are that quick and explosive. We were just caught off guard a little bit by it. KC has more eligibility for us in the future and that will pay off for us down the road."
The tournament wraps up the season for the squad, who finished 7-4 in duals after a rough start. As a team the Argos finished tied for 28
th at the Tournament with 15 points.
"It was definitely building year," Komac said. "It was a year where we saw improvement throughout the season. That's a positive. The kids that came to the National Tournament definitely deserved to be here. We showed that we can be successful here against this level of competition. We need to build more to make sure we have more success against this level of competition. We're in a lot better place than we were when we started."
