Argos Fall to Warriors on Day One of Weekend Series

SALEM, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team lost to Corban in both games of their Friday doubleheader. The Argos (0-20, 0-14) nearly defeated the Warriors (14-22, 8-10) in the first game, falling 4-3 in eight innings before losing 10-2 in the second game.

The Argos got off to a hot start on the day, scoring three runs right out of the gate in the top of the first inning. McKenzie Staats brought Gracie Fleming home off a single to left field. After Staats stole second, Karlie David singled up the middle to bring Sydney Wilting home. Staats scored her own run off another single, this time from Sirena Rosalez to give the squad a 3-0 lead.

The team held the Warriors scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, allowing a single run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie it up. The Argos left a runner on base in three out of the last four innings, paving the way for the Warriors to score in the bottom of the eighth inning for the win.

The Argos outhit the Warriors 9-8 in the first game, but committed three errors to the Warriors one. Staats led the team with three hits, while Karlie David added two. Carter Thornton played the entire game on the mound, allowing eight hits and recording two strikeouts.

"We got off to a great start that game," head coach Joey Egan said. "We were aggressive offensively but just couldn't generate enough runs. We played a solid game but we just couldn't break through on offense and it came back to bite us."

The Warriors used that momentum from the first game to score two runs in the bottom of the first. After a scoreless second inning from both sides, the Argos got on the board scoring two runs of their own off of Taylor Mathew's two-run shot. After getting blanked in the bottom of the third, the Warriors responded with two four-run innings to end the game in five innings.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the final doubleheader of the series. The first game will begin at 12:00 p.m. MTN in Salem, Ore.
