Argos Split Doubleheader with Eagles

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence softball team split their doubleheader with Northwest on Friday. The Argos (2-24, 1-18) defeated the Eagles (11-25, 8-13) 12-7 in the first game before lost 27-0 in the second game.

The Argos pulled off an incredible comeback in the first game of the day. Trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Argos rattled off nine runs to retake the lead. The inning included two three players recording multiple RBIs in the inning – Karlie David and McKenzie Staats both recorded two, while Sam Hernandez recorded three on double to left field. The Eagles managed to score one run in the top of the seventh, but not enough to claim the victory.

David, Hernandez, Staats finished with three RBIs while Mangold finished with two. Sirena Rosalez and Azia Umphrey both added one for the squad. David, Hernandez, Mangold and Umphrey led the team with two hits on the day. Carter Thornton got the win on the mound for the squad, recording three strikeouts and only two earned runs.

"We played our buts off in that sixth inning," head coach Joey Egan. "We were extremely focused on getting back in the game, and once we did that, our confidence took over. We were loose and comfortable but also focused and that translate to a nine-run inning."

The Eagles came out hot in the second game, recording 15 runs alone in the first inning. They kept it up all game, ending the game 27-0 after five innings.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the final two games of the weekend series. The first game will begin at 12:00 p.m. MTN.
