Argos Drop Final Two Games of Weekend Series to Eagles

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence softball team fell to the University of Northwest in both games of Saturday's doubleheader in Great Falls. The Argos (2-26, 1-19) fell to the Eagles (14-26, 10-14) 18-9 in the first game and 8-6 in the second game.

The Eagles started off the first game fo the day with three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Argos responded with three runs of their own to tie it up after one.The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the second inning, but the Argos continued the offensive output, stringing together four runs to take a 7-5 lead.

After two scoreless innings, the Eagles exploded in the top of the fifth, recording a total of seven runs to recapture the lead. After the Argos crossed the plate once in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles exploded for six more runs to increase their total to 18.

The Argos recorded 10 hits in the first game, led by two apiece from Ryen Palmer and Sirena Rosalez. Palmer also added three RBIs on the day. Rosalez, McKenzie Staats and Azia Umphrey each finished with two runs on the day.

"They came out aggressive and we did a great job of matching that early," head coach Joey Egan said. "We had two blowup innings late where we didn't recover quick enough and that cost us the game."

The Eagles jumped out quickly again in the final game of the series, jumping out to 7-1 lead after five innings. However, the Argos responded in full force in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs to cut the deficit to a single run. The Eagles added one more run to their total and held the Argos scoreless in the final inning to secure the victory.

Taylor Mathews, Palmer, Staats and Umphrey each recorded two hits a piece in the final game, making up eight of the team's ten total hits. Umphrey also led the team with two RBIs. Khalyn Hageness played the complete game from the mound, recording three strikeouts.

The Argos, who just completed their 10th game in eight days, will get a much-needed break. They will take on #2 Oregon Tech next weekend in Klamath Falls, Ore. The first game will begin on April 15 at 3:00 p.m. MTN.
