Butte, Mont. - Errors and a loss of momentum cost the University of Providence a 5-set loss to Bushnell (Ore.) on day two of the Big Sky Volleyball Challenge in the Mining City. The Argos fell 25-13, 23-25, 25-18, 23-25, 10-15 to fall to 0-2 in the young season.
After splitting the first 2 sets, Providence jumped out to a big lead in the third led by timely hitting and ball control but lost that momentum in the fourth. In the fifth and deciding set, the Argos led 3-1 before the Beacons of the Cascade Conference, rolled off 7 of the next 8 points. Head coach Arunas Duda says that was the story of the match, ups and downs with the inability to stop the opponents runs hurt, "We had a chance to go up 4-1 but a hitting error, some passing errors, that word keeps repeating itself, error, error, error, so we just have to take better care of the ball on our side, do some better things. We will be ok in the long run, we're definitely not there yet."
For the match, the Argos outhit the Beacons .194 to .142 and tallied 54 kills to 51. Providence committed 25 errors. Duda says the team will not dwell on the loss and shift its focus, "My whole philosophy is always it's not what happens, it's how you respond. We can sit around and complain about it, or we can go out and beat our next opponent and get back on track."
"Jensyn (Turner) is playing at a high level, she's become our go-to hitter, Zoe (Naugle) has been doing a good job. Our ball control was better today as well.
Turner led the team with 14 kills while hitting .444. Bella Thompson had a career high 43 assists with 7 digs and Taylor Christensen led the way with 22 digs.
The win over the Argos is just the second in Bushnell history over an NAIA top 10 team. The Beacons were led by Leah Agost who tallied 15 kills in her collegiate debut.
