MARSHALL, Missouri -- The University of Providence men's wrestling program placed 6
th out of 45 schools in attendance at the Missouri Valley Invitational on Saturday.
Head coach
Steve Komac on his team's performance stated, "We brought 12 guys down to see what kind of progress we've made on certain weights, and we are very happy with what we saw. It was a pretty good effort by everyone and there were lots of good things happening in the matches. There is room to grow but we are definitely climbing the ranks."
Sophomore
Abel Nava was the highlight for UP going 5-0 on the weekend and taking first place. Nava picked up two ranked wins on Saturday defeating #8 Maximus Zamora in the semifinals and defeating #11 Daniil Gorshkov in the Championship Match.
#14 freshman
Pig Hobbs placed third at the Missouri Valley Invitational after going 7-1 on the weekend. Hobbs also picked up a ranked win defeating the returning NAIA National Champion and #2 ranked Rysan Leong in the third-place match.
#17 redshirt sophomore
Ethan DeRoche finished the weekend 4-2 at took fourth place. DeRoche picked up a ranked win on Saturday as well defeating #9 Alton Allen to advance to the third-place match. #20 junior
Liam Swanson also placed at the Missouri Valley Invitational finishing 8
th.
The Argos will be back in action Jan. 27 for senior day versus Southern Oregon University. Wrestlers will begin at 3:00 p.m. in Great Falls, MT.
