HELENA, Mont. – Louis Torres continues to be a performer for big moments. He once again scored the game winner in overtime for Argo soccer, this time a 2-1 double-overtime win against conference rival Carroll College.Â
For a vast majority of the game it looked like the Argos would lose their 5-game winning streak due to an inability to finish on scoring chances.
UGF went down early, allowing a Fighting Saints goal in the 12th minute. After that, however, the Argos began to control the pace of play, possessing the ball and creating scoring chances. The first half shot totals heavily favored UGF, with a disparity of 6-2. Â
"Our movement was flat to start, but I thought we did a good job making some adjustments, and creating more opportunities as the game went along," said UGF head coach Joseph Yeisley.
The Argos managed five more shots in the second half, although Carroll reestablished itself as a scoring threat as well. CC put two more shots on net, but this time freshman keeper Marc Girones was equal to the task.
Then Torres stole the moment for the first time. The senior midfielder managed to find the ball and enough space to score in a post-corner kick scrum in from of the net. His effort tied the game with just 37 seconds remaining.
Having stolen the victory and the momentum away from the Saints, UGF kicked up the intensity in the first overtime period. Torres, Jon-Eric Krans and substitute Christopher Chavez combined for four shots on goal, but once again lacked the scoring touch.
The second overtime period brought what has seen to be the inevitable: Torres ending overtime with a goal. It took just under two minutes for that eventuality to take place, as Torres beat a defender inside the box, shot, and won the game. It was his third game winning overtime goal this season.
"He really stepped up and made some plays down the stretch, which was evident with his two goals," Yeisley said. "He has been clutch for us in these close games."
The win is the sixth straight for Yeisley's team which is now 7-3 (5-1). The Argos are one of four Cascade Collegiate Conference team's with just one loss. There are no teams left in the CCC without a conference loss.
Now halfway through their conference season, the UGF men are deep in the hunt for a conference title. Their next test will be a home contest against Northwest University, 7-5 (5-2), on October 16 at 3:30 p.m. Â
