PHOENIX, Ariz. – UGF volleyball finished its two day, four game stint in Arizona with a 4-0 record and only one dropped set. The Lady Argos took a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) match from Arizona Christian University and won 3-1 (25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22) against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
When the Lady Argos played ACU the previous day, head coach Arunas Duda chose to use his normal starting lineup in the first set but soon began dishing out playing time to his bench players. Â In the second go-round Duda played with the line-up right away.
The team's usual libero, Kennedy Chadwick got a rest for the entire match with senior Jacey Habets taking her place. Habets faired well with 14 digs, as did the rest of the UGF defense that limited the Firestorm to a hitting percentage of just .077.
The back row defense was made easier by the dangerous net defense of sophomore middle blocker Josee Pendleton and her six block assists.
One of the standouts from the previous day's games, Kateri Blodgette-Baker, continued to impress. With season kill leader Madison Wilhelm only playing one set, the freshman led the team with nine kills.
With most of the team's top players rested from sitting a majority,, or all of the ACU game, the Lady Argos started well against the Eagles. Â The UGF attack was efficient with 17 kills and helped the team win by the largest margin of any of the game's four sets.
The second set was closer, with both team's hitting similar percentages but in different ways. Off the strength of outside hitter Wilhelm and a handful of other aggressive UGF hitters, the Argos amassed 19 kills but did so while committing seven errors. The Eagles, on the other hand, found it harder to beat their opponent's defense but also avoided mistakes, only giving UGF three points from hitting errors.
After dropping the third set that saw both teams hurt themselves with mistakes, UGF stopped the bleeding with a 25-22 fourth set win.
Wilhelm had her typically impressive stat line with a team high 18 kills to go with 17 digs. She was supported offensively by Kelsee Montagna with 12 kills, Tiffany Marks with 11, and Blodgette-Baker with 10.Â
Their success was often the end product of a strong game from sophomore setter Dani Norling who finished with 40 assists and added three kills, eight digs, and one ace.
With four non-conference wins added to their record, which now stands at 22-7 (2-3), the Lady Argos come back home on October 17 with hopes of adding a conference win against Montana State University-Northern at 7 p.m.
