Ooko and Krans Lead Argos in CCC Playoff Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Argo's scoring momentum from their final few games of the regular season translated into the Cascade Collegiate Conference playoffs with a 3-0 win over Warner Pacific College.

UGF started as the early aggressor, using the speed of senior forward Jon-Eric Krans down the left wing to try and get behind the Knight's defense. That strategy worked in the seventh minute as Krans scored with an accurate hit from the outside of his right foot that found the far corner of the net. The CCC All-Conference player was assisted by senior forward Renan Zampieri.

The Argonauts kept up the pressure for most of the half, earning six corner kicks and placing four shots on the WPC goal.

In the 40th minute, one of those UGF corners, hit by senior Anderson Cardoso, found the feat of junior forward Ian Ooko who had the space to gather the ball, and shoot it into the top of the net to put the Argos up by two.

The two teams tied with 10 shots in the first half, although Great Fall's freshman keeper Marc Girones only had to make one save.

The second half played out similarly to the first and soon Ooko was on the scoring end of another ball coming across the net. This time it wasn't a corner, but a cross from sophomore midfielder Christopher Chavez who made a useful run down the right flank. He cross made it to about four yards from the far post, where Ooko's head was waiting to put it in the net in the 53rd minute.

Despite the lead, UGF stayed aggressive for the next twenty minutes or so, possession the ball well but not creating many more quality score chances. In the final 20, the Knights threatened to ruin Girones' shutout bid, but the freshman was up to the task of all three WPC shots on goal.

Warner Pacific ended up outshooting the Argos 18-16 and had just one less shot on frame. In a reverse from their play in the middle of the regular season, it was the Argo's ability to convert on scoring chances that proved to be the difference.

UGF's win puts them into the CCC semi-finals which will be played on Thursday, November 12. The third seeded Argos will take on the second seed, Corban University, at 4 p.m. for a chance to play in the conference final on Saturday.
