GREAT FALLS – Conference play for Argos soccer opened with a game against Corban University that was played evenly but ended in a 2-0 loss for UGF.
The University of Great Falls was the first to test the other team's keeper with a dangerous set piece from senior Anderson Cardoso forcing the Warrior's netminder into a full extension to avoid an early Argos lead. The next twenty minutes saw UGF get most of the game's limited offensive chances in a physical and defensive contest, but it was Corban that took the advantage in the twenty-third minute.
After conceding the goal, the UGF defense didn't allow another shot for the rest of the first half while the offense finished the first period with five shots. Looking like the aggressor, the Argos started the second half down 1-0 and continued to threaten the Warrior's net.
Cardoso got another look at the goal and junior midfielder Mohamed Oulare had a dangerous look from inside the box that may have been tipped over the net by the outstretched Corban keeper. None of these looks found their mark, however, and with just three minutes to go, the Warriors took advantage of the Argo's amped up offensive effort and finished on a cross into the box.
Great Falls outshot Corban 10-7 and were dead even on both shots-on-goal and number of corner kicks. The difference was simply that Warrior's shots found the back of the net.
The Argos will look to quickly find their finish touch for their home conference match against Northern Christian University on saturday, September 19 at 4 pm.
