LA GRANDE, Ore. – It took 102 minutes but Argos soccer got its record to .500 and 2-1 in conference with a 2-1 double-overtime win against Eastern Oregon University. Luis Torres, a senior midfielder, played the hero for UGF, scoring twelve minutes into overtime and saving a game his team led for 40 minutes.
That lead was first taken in the twenty-eighth minute with a set piece from senior midfielder Anderson Cardoso that glanced off the keeper's hands and into the net. The team had plenty of scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, placing eleven shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Marc Girones also made three crucial saves in the first half to keep UGF in the lead.
Despite outshooting the Mountaineers 10-4 in the second half, it was Eastern Oregon that found the back of the net in the sixty-fourth minute. The goal tied up the game at one apiece. The Argos continued to apply offensive pressure, getting off 10 shots in the second half, none of which, however, could bring a win in regulation.
Overtime was dominated by UGF. The Mountaineers weren't able to get off a shot, while the Argos manufactured two, one of which was the winner from Torres.
The goal was assisted by junior midfielder and was Torres' second of the year, and twenty-sixth as an Argo.
The win is the second straight for the University of Great Falls and brings them to 3-3 (2-1) on the year after starting 1-2. They will play next at Warner Pacific on September 26 at 3:30 pm.
