PORTLAND, Ore. – The University of Great Falls men's soccer team is on a three-game winning streak after their 1-0 victory over Warner Pacific College. A win that once again required extra time.
After defeating Eastern Oregon University 2-1 in double overtime the day before, the Argos played a scoreless 90 minutes against the Knights. The UGF defense only allowed two shots in the first half, and when WPC picked up their offensive intensity in the second half, Argos keeper Marc Girones was equal to the task. Girones made four of his six saves in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
Just as they did against the Mountaineers, Great Falls took control of the game in overtime. In the nine minutes of extra time, the UGF defense allowed just one shot, which wasn't on frame.
On the offensive side, it was senior midfield Luis Torres who put in the day's most crucial performance, finishing from eight yard out in the ninety-ninth minute to win the game. The shot came from an inside-the-box pass from sophomore forward Christoffer Bisbo.
Torres made the clutch overtime play for the second straight game after scoring the game winner against EOU twelve minutes into overtime.
The win brings Great Falls to a 4-3 (3-1) record and gives them a winning record for the first time this year. It also places them fourth in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings.
The Argos will have a tough test to continue their winning streak as they next face twenty-first ranked Rocky Mountain College at home on October 2 at 1:30 pm, a team they suffered a heartbreaking 6-5 OT loss to earlier in the season.
