HAVRE, Mont. – Offensively, Argo basketball did enough to hang with MSU-Northern. Defensively, they weren't able to do enough get a win, losing to the Lights 73-65.
Both teams shot well throughout the game, but one more made shot and a few extra UGF turnovers led to a seven-point Lights lead at the half. For the first twenty minutes, the Argo's play was about its guards. Redshirt freshman guard Michael Harris led the team with six points in the first half while senior guard Darren Lockett led with three rebounds and sophomore guard Sergio Berkley led with two assists.
In the second half, the Argos found more balance offensively by feeding the ball into big man John Makkar and driving into the paint with Berkley and junior Malik Barnes. Barnes had one of his best halves of the year, finishing the game with a team high of 16 points off of 5-7 shooting from the field.
UGF made exactly half of their shots in the second half and hit on 13 of 18 free throws. That shooting kept the Argos close, as close as five points at times in the second half, but an even better 56 percent shooting from the Lights never let it get closer than that.
Berkley and Makkar were next leading scorers behind Barnes. Berkley finished with 13 while Makkar scored 12. Both shot an even 50 percent.
The loss is the seventh straight for UGF with the last six of those coming on a three-week long stretch of road games. With a record of 10-14 (3-12), the Argos will finally return home on Saturday, Feb. 20 looking to get a much needed win against (15) Carroll College.
