KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the second straight week, a University of Providence women's volleyball player took home a National Award.
After a record-breaking performance, setter
Cydney Finberg-Roberts was
named the NAIA National Setter of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. She was also
named the Frontier Conference Player of the Week earlier this week, along with
Kelsey Shaver.
"I'm really excited for her," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "She's been working really hard this year. She was comfortable with a completely different system and now we switched midseason and she's adjusted tremendously. She's doing a great job."
The award comes after the sophomore broke a Frontier Conference record by recording 75 assists against Rocky Mountain College in a
five-set victory that gave the Argos a share of the Frontier Conference title. For the week, she recorded 110 assists (13.75 a set) and also had 22 digs (2.75 a set). She also contributed four kills and one block assist.
"Her performance was huge in the sense that we needed every single one of those assists to beat Rocky and win the conference championship," Duda said. "She did a nice job of getting the job done. She'll be the first to say the hitters did a good job, but she had an unbelievable performance herself. She's super humble and she's everything you want out of a setter as we get ready for the conference tournament."
This award comes a week after libero
Sacha Legros was
named the NAIA National Defender of the Week last week, the first time in program history.
"It's really exciting to get this national recognition for the performances our girls are putting on," Duda said. "We're a top 20 team in the country, so it really puts a spotlight on what we're trying to accomplish as a program. It's nice to see people take notice."
Duda has been proud of the growth Finberg-Roberts has demonstrated throughout the season, especially after switching formations midway through the season.
"It's huge for her maturity for her step on the court and run the offense she wants to run," Duda said. "It's really critical for our team that she knows who needs the ball and to get it to them. She knows what the coaches want and she executes."
The Argos are hoping Finberg-Roberts will produce another exemplary performance this weekend during the
Frontier Conference Tournament. Their road will start against Montana State – Northern at 5 p.m. on Friday night in the McLaughlin Center.
