WHITEFISH, Mont. – The awards keep piling on for the University of Providence women's volleyball team.
Days after
winning the Frontier Conference Tournament in convincing fashion, four Argos were
recognized as All-Conference Players.
Senior outside hitter
Kelsey Shaver was named the Frontier Conference Player of the Year. Shaver,
Averi Dyer and
Tyna William were all named 1
st Team All-Conference, while
Jensyn Turner was named to the 2
nd Team.
Ember Schwindt was also given the Champion of Character Award.
"To have all three of our seniors be All-Conference was huge," head coach Aruans Duda said. "They contributed so much throughout the year. Jensyn getting recognized as well was also great. She just continued to improve throughout the entire year."
The Argos were one of three teams to have three players recognized as 1
st Team All-Conference; Montana Tech and Rocky Mountain both had three as well.
Shaver, a senior from Scotts Valley, California was named the Player of the Year. Shaver is 3
rd in the conference in hitting percentage with .260. She leads the conference in kills per set with 4.6. She's 6
th in the nation in kills per set. She leads the conference with 387 kills, which is even more impressive considering she has played 27 less sets than the 2
nd place kill leader. She is also 5
th in the conference in service aces with 32. She is also 11
th in the conference with 319 digs.
"I'm really pleased that Kelsey won Player of the Year," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "I think she was the top performer in our conference this season. She's just a valuable member of our team. She led us in kills in almost every single match. You can't say enough about her performance and what she did for us this year."
Duda was also pleased with Dyer's performance for the year. Initially starting as a libero, the Kalama, Washington native was switched to outside hitter. Since the switch, the Argos have been on a six-game winning streak. Dyer has recorded 528 digs on the season, good for 6th in the conference. She's also 6
th in the conference in digs per set with 4.9. She's also recorded 86 kills and 49 assists for the Argos.
"It's a tough transition going from libero and then all of a sudden having to play front row almost near the end of the season," Duda said. "She did it extremely well. She gives us another dynamic option on the outside. She just has such a heavy arm and is able to put the ball away. Keeping her on the court for six rotations any way we can was the goal from the beginning of the season. For her being able to switch and doing that for her team was awesome."
William, a senior from Castries, Saint Lucia has been an important piece for the Argos success as well. William is 6
th in the conference in blocks with 95, and 4
th in the conference in blocks per set with 1.0. For the season she's recorded 193 kills for the Argos.
"Tyna has the ability to take over any match with her play in the front row," Duda said. "She showed that in that conference tournament. She did such a nice job of siding out well for us and taking the court away with her blocks. She's been doing a great job for us."
Turner, a junior from Payson, Utah was named to the Frontier Conference 2
nd Team. Jensen continually improved as the season went on, cultivating in the championship game where she
led the team with 15 kills and .700 hitting percentage. On the season, she is 11
th in the conference in kills (241), kills per set (2.3), and hitting percentage (.189). She also contributed 49 blocks.
"Jensyn has been a difference maker for us," Duda said. "She had 15 kills off of 20 swings and hit .700 in the final. That's unheard of, especially against a team with two really big left side blockers. For her to step up and play that well was just amazing and exactly what we needed in that situation. With her work ethic and what she does day in and day out, it's no surprise to us that she continues to improve at such a great pace. I love her drive and I love her work ethic. She deserves to be on there so I'm glad she is."
Ember Schwindt, a junior from Thompson Falls, Montana, was also recognized by the conference as the Champion of Character. Schwindt proved invaluable to the Argos on the court, as she recorded 178 kills and 81 blocks on the season. Though as important as she is on the court, Duda was even more impressed with how she carried herself off of it.
"Ember winning the Champion of Character was such a great moment," he said. "She doesn't get the All-Conference recognition like I think she could and she didn't receive any of those types of awards. She's a kid that works so hard every day in practice and knowing the type of character that she has and the thing she does outside the classroom as well for her teammates and for her community, she's so deserving of that award. She's just such a great kid with outstanding character. We're so happy that she was able to be recognized that way. She doesn't get enough for being as good of a person as she is."
Though Duda is pleased with the recognition his players received, he knows he has several kids who are capable of playing at an All-Conference level.
"I think we could have had more even," Duda said. "If we had run a 5-1 run all year I think you could have seen
Cydney Finberg-Roberts in there as well. Ember contributes so much in every match that I wouldn't be surprised if she got some votes. We have a lot of kids that have the ability to be an All-Conference performer every match. We're really pleased with the depth that we have. We have some really great kids that just want to work and want to win and want to improve. I think it says great things about where our program is and where we're going to be with some of the younger kids we have."
The Argos will hope to get several All-Conference performances from their players during the National Tournament. The Argos,
who were given the #17 seed, will begin their postseason tournament run on Dec. 3.
