Great Falls, Mont. - After starting the 2019 season with a couple of road trips, both Argo soccer teams will play a doubleheader at Argo Field this weekend for their home opener.
On Friday, the women's team will play Northwest at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3:30 p.m. The teams will play Evergreen State on Saturday at 1 and 3:30 p.m.Â
"I think the team is just excited to be at home to showcase what we've been working on," women's head coach
Brian Clarke said. "I know the players are excited to be back at home."
After playing on the road for the first four games of the season, the women's team takes the field looking to bounce back after some tight losses. The women have started 1-3, which have included two losses by only one goal.Â
"We've been talking about how it's not about how you start, it's about how you finish," Clarke said. "There are teams in the league that have shown that in the past. Last year we started 4-1 in conference play and didn't make the conference tournament. It's not about how you start it's how you finish and how you take care of business along the way. We just need to clean up a few things."
Things don't get easier for the Argos, as the team will play two very difficult opponents in their home debut. On Friday, the Argos face Northwest (4-2), who is coming off an Elite 8 run last season, and Evergreen State (2-2) on Saturday, who defeated them last year in a comeback victory.Â
"Northwest is a tough team," Clarke said. "They're going to be a quality team who is well-coached with great athletes. It's going to be a good match. And then Evergreen beat us last year. We were up 2-0 and they came back and beat us. Both are quality sides and it's going to be tough matchups."
However both opponents will have to make a plan for Argo forward
Eme McLaughlin, who leads the team with eight goals on the season. She's taken 19 shots so far, 16 of which have been on goal.Â
"Eme is Eme," Clark said. "She's just a competitor. Regardless of the goals, Eme has stepped up as a leader, and she's shown the young players especially how to keep fighting and to have that grit and that mindset."
On the men's side, the Argos look to build upon a successful start to the season. The team returned from a road trip in Arizona undefeated, and currently have a record of 2-0-1.Â
"The team is in a good place," head coach
Matt Ball said. "They're all positive. The energy is really good. They're starting to click. But we still need to keep that underdog mentality. It's not going to be given to us. We have to earn it."
The Argos open up conference play against Northwest and Evergreen State, two teams which the Argos don't know much about.Â
"There's a different level of intensity once conference starts," Ball said. "We haven't seen a ton of film on these guys. It's a bit of an unknown but we trust ourselves to play like we should. If we want to do something this year then we have to start well. There's no real alternative there."
