CORVALLIS, Ore. – The University of Providence men's wrestling program was picked to finish 6
th in the
Cascade Collegiate Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll that was released on Wednesday.
The Argos finished with a total of 90 points in the poll. They were eight points behind Eastern Oregon (98) and 11 points behind Vanguard. In state rival MSU-Northern was picked 3
rd with a 114 points, while Embry-Riddle was picked second at 120. Menlo College was picked to win the league with a 131 points.
"We know we have some work to do," head coach
Steve Komac said. "We know that we're a pretty young team. We lost a few key guys a year ago. That's a conversation that our staff and our kids are having right now. We really like our group of kids."
The Argos return three National Qualifiers from a year ago as well as
Hayden Schrull, who
qualified for the NAIA National Championships two years ago, who sat out last season with an injury. They also bring in a ton of
new recruits that Komac believes will immediately help their roster.
"We'll lean on those four to be leaders in the wrestling room," Komac said. "Hayden will bring some depth as well as several other new kids who we think will do a good job for us."
Komac said that the team has looked great in preseason, and believes the team is capable of having lots of success on the year.
"Our workouts are going great," he said. "We've been putting some time in out on the pavement and in the weight room. We're just starting to get into the practice room now. So far the workouts have been pretty good."
The Argos will kick off their season on Nov. 2 with an intra-squad scrimmage in the McLaughlin Center. Their first official dual will be against Northwest on Nov. 6 in Powell.
