GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #9 University of Providence volleyball team will look to earn their 11
th straight win on Saturday when they take on Rocky Mountain College in Billings. First-serve will take place at 2:00 p.m.
The Argos (17-2, 4-0) are coming off a
road win against Carroll College on Tuesday. The match was a good test for a team that hadn't played a match in over 10 days. After dropping the first set, the Argos responded valiantly, winning the next three handily to take a 3-1 victory.
"I thought the match against Carroll was a good true test for us," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "The girls responded so well after the first set and were able to bounce back. The more time in the gym, the more reps we have to fix things after a little break there, I think it's all going to pay off in the end."
The night was also significant for
Sacha Legros, who became the all-time dig leader in program history after recording 26 digs. She has recorded a total of 1,699 digs during her career. What's even more impressive is she spent more than half of her first season playing in the front row, significantly decreasing her opportunities to pass.
"It's kind of mind-blowing putting it all in perspective," Duda said. "She broke the record in two and a half years, and we didn't have her playing libero until halfway through her first year. We recruited her as an outside hitter and now she's one of the top liberos in the nation."
Legros will have some fierce competition across the net in Ayla Embry. Embry, last season's Frontier Conference Defender of the Year, anchors a stout Rocky Mountain (10-12, 2-2) defense. Embry currently leads the nation in digs per set (7.40) and is second in total digs (599).
"They defend incredibly well," Duda said. "They have got one of the best liberos in the country in Ayla. They're pretty tough at the net as well. They read well, they block well. They're a very good defensive team who's offense is starting to come along as well. If you get frustrated by not being able to put the ball away and start making errors that's when they can really get to you."
The two teams have already
faced off against each other once this season, nearly a month ago on Sept. 18 at the Frontier Conference Preseason Tourney. The Argos topped the Battlin' Bears in a tightly-contested four-set match. Both teams however, have come a long way in the four weeks since.
"Their younger kids have gotten some maturity," Duda said. "Some of the kids that are new to their lineup are starting to mesh better and play better. It's definitely going to be a tougher Rocky team now than a month ago."
"On our end, we're slowly fixing some of the things that we were getting burned on early in the year," he said. "There were a few plays at Carroll where I realized that those things were starting to pay off because you see those things happen in the match. I'm really impressed with their mindset. I think we're tougher mentally than we were a month ago."
