GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team will play the final matches of their regular season this weekend with a pair of road games. The Argos (3-9-1, 3-7-1) will take on Carroll College on Friday before traveling to Washington to take on Walla, Walla.
The team is currently 11
th in the Cascade Collegiate Standings with 10 points, three spots out of the Top 8 that will go to the Conference Tournament. If the team goes 2-0 this weekend, they'd still need help from other teams to make the tournament, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility. Ahead of the Argos are the Fighting Saints (4-7-2, 4-5-2), so a win against their rival would really increase their chances.
"Our chances of making the conference tournament are slim," interim head coach
Michael Rahn said. "This Carroll game is like our championship now. They're going to be very difficult to beat at home. They're a very quality side with good coaches. It's going to be a challenge."
The Fighting Saints however, are also fighting for one of the last spots in the tournament too, so the team knows the game will be very competitive.
"They're a big, strong athletic team," Rahn said. "They have some nice skillful players. They have a nice strong backline with a big goalkeeper. They're well-coached. It's going to be a tight game. We're going to try to make the little things go in our favor. Hopefully we can come out with a great win."
After the game against Carroll, the team will travel to Washington to take on Walla Walla. The Wolves are 0-16 on the season, but Rahn knows the game will be difficult nonetheless.
"They're struggling," Rahn said. "I don't think they've been close in many games, which makes them more dangerous in my mind. I hope we can come and stay focused on what we want to accomplish. I want to come out of there with a win."
The team has spent the past week maintaining their level of focus so that they're prepared for the Conference Tournament if they do make it.
"We've been working on maintaining our championship characteristics," Rahn said. "We want to carry ourselves like we want to be perceived and we believe we can be. We want to be champions in everything we do every day. We've been training with the right kind of discipline and focus and effort, which will get us where we want to go."
The game against Carroll will begin at 1:00 p.m. Friday in Helena while the game against Walla will begin at 2:00 p.m. MTN. on Sunday.
