GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence hockey team fell to Williston State 5-3 Saturday night at the Great Falls Ice Plex.
The Argos (2-2) got up early after
Liam Carvalho and
Reed Link scored first-period goals. The Tetons (2-2) responded by scoring in the second period, but the Argos still maintained a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
The Tetons (3-1) scored two quick goals to open the third period, giving them a 3-2 lead. The Argos had some chances in the third, but the Tetons were the ones who found the back of the net, taking a 4-2 lead with seven minutes left. Carvalho scored his second goal with 1:37 left to make it a one-score goal, but the Tetons sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 18 seconds remaining.
"We had some scoring opportunities late that could have changed things," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "I thought we got into some extracurricular activities there in the second that kind of took our focus away from what was going on. We kind of ran out of gas in the third. They scored a couple of quick ones and came back. It was a weird game. It looked like we were going to run away with it early and it went the other way."
The team will take a few days to recover before hitting the ice to practice again. The Argos will host a three game home stand in two weeks, starting Nov. 11 with a 7:30 game against Utah State.
"We need to take a few days and rest," Heimel said. "Sometimes time off when emotions are high is a good thing. We got a good group that wants to win so obviously they're disappointed. I'm disappointed. We'll give them some space for a second and then refocus and start talking about what we have to do moving forward. Losses are tough but they're learning opportunities."
