WHITEFISH, Mont. – University of Providence men's basketball player
Marcus Stephens was named the Erck Hotels Frontier Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Stephens, a 6-3 guard from Hilltop, Wash., led the team to
two wins over Yellowstone Christian in their season debut this weekend. For the weekend, he averaged 19.0 points, 6.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game while shooting 27 of 47 from the field (51.9%) and 7 of 15 from beyond the arc (46.7%). He recorded his first double-double as an Argo on Saturday, recording 23 points and 10 assists.
"Marcus played great this weekend," head coach
Steve Keller said. "He was aggressive scoring the ball and also had quite a few assists. The passing is something that he's added to his game and it makes him a very dangerous player."
As the team has continued to gel this preseason, the returning
Honorable Mention All-American and
Frontier Conference Newcomer of the Year has taken it upon himself to become a leader for the Argos (2-0).
"That's something that we've asked him to do," Keller said. "He's really stepped up and become a guy that our entire team listens to and responds too. I'm happy for him. Hopefully he keeps it up."
The team will return to the floor this weekend, with a pair of exhibition games against the Seattle Mountaineers. The first game will take place at Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
