GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Five wrestlers from the University of Providence women's wrestling team were ranked individually in their respective weight classes in the latest rendition of
NAIA National Poll. As a team, the Argos were ranked 18
th.
Head coach
Matt Atwood believes the Argos, who were
ranked 16th last week, will continue to slide down the National Rankings as other teams get in more competitions.
"We haven't been able to compete much which unfortunately means we're going to drop down in the rankings," he said. "We haven't been able to prove anything. I think we'd do really well in a normal season. I want these girls to show what they can do. We have a really solid team here, and we're only getting better."
Despite the lack of team ranking , five individual wrestlers continue to be recognized. Ivy Navarro is ranked 3
rd in the 101 lb. weight class, her sister
Ira Navarro is ranked 9
th in the 101 lb. weight class, Lana Hunt is ranked 13
th in he 109 lb. weight class,
Jenna Awana is ranked 15
th in the 143 lb. weight class and
Sabrina Perez is ranked 16
th in the 170 lb. weight class.
"Five is a really good start," Atwood said. "We'd probably have a few more in there had we been able to hit a few more tournaments."
Ivy Navarro is off to a stellar start to the season, ranking 3
rd in the 101 lb. weight class. In her first competition of the season, she defeated Melanie Salazar of Simpson last week via technical fall. Atwood believes she has a good chance of competing at the National Tournament later this season.
"Ivy is tough," he said. "She's so tough. She's driven. She's very competitive. I'm excited for her to compete at Nationals because I think she has a good shot to win it."
Her sister Ira is off to a similar start, having come in ranked 9
th in the same weight class. She also defeated Salazar via technical fall last weekend.
"Ira is another one who is super driven," Atwood said. "She competes against her sister and is right there with her. The fact that she wrestles one of the top wrestlers in the country every day definitely helps her. She competes every day, she lifts and works hard every day. She never misses a workout ever. She tries to find a time to get extra work in. It's awesome."
Hunt was ranked 13
th in the 109 lb. weight class. She is coming off a stellar weekend, where she recorded two pins en route to going 4-0.
"Lana is another one that I think is going to surprise some people," Atwood said. "We've been working on mentality and confidence. She's super driven, she's super focused, she works super hard every day. I'm excited to see what she does because she might surprise some people."
Awana is ranked 15
th in the 143 lb. weight class. She didn't get a chance to compete last weekend, but Atwood is enthused about her projection for the season.
"I'm really excited for Jenna," Atwood said. "She's a senior, she's driven. It was a tough year for her last year with the
National Tournament getting canceled. This is her last year so it's her last shot. I think she's focused on that. She knows what she needs to do."
Perez rounds out that individuals ranked with a #16 spot in the 170 lb. weight class. She also is yet to compete so far this season.
"I'm expecting Sabrina to do very well," Atwood said. "I see her implementing stuff that we learned in practice so you can tell she's really been working on that stuff. I'm excited to see what she does at the National Tournament."
