GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence athletic department announced Friday that
Michael Rahn has been named the interim head men's soccer coach.
Daniel Burstein, who was the head men's soccer coach last season, resigned in early August to become the assistant soccer coach at the University of North Dakota.
"I'm humbled to have the opportunity to work as the head coach at the University of Providence," Rahn said. "I'm blessed to have fulfilled my dream of returning to college athletics with the Argo men's soccer program."
Rahn joins the Argos after serving as an assistant coach at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado, helping lead the team to a #14 ranking last season. Prior to Northeastern, Rahn coached as an assistant at Lake Superior College, where he coached the team to a runner-up finish in Region XIII. He coached at Georgia Gwinnett College in the fall of 2016, where he worked primarily with the goalkeepers.
"We are very excited to welcome Michael into our Argo family," athletic director
Doug Hashley said. "Since he's been here, it has been very apparent that he is a grinder. Obviously, he is very competent in his knowledge of the game. I'm extremely confident that he will be a positive addition to our men's soccer program."
Rahn also has a plethora of NCAA Division I coaching experience, serving as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin and Michigan State, where he played collegiate soccer in the late 80's. His stops also include Myers University and serving as the head coach at Viterbo University.
Beyond coaching, Rahn has also served as the head of the Physical Education Department and Athletic Director for international schools in Beijing, China. He was a staff coach with the Sports Beijing Club Senior Dragon's Boy and Girls teams. During this time period, Rahn played for several teams in the Beijing Premier League. He also played professionally with the Windsor Wheels (CSL 93'), Detroit Neon (CISL 94') and finally was a player-coach for the Kalamazoo Kingdom (USISL 96').
"The team, athletic department and institution has been beyond gracious in welcoming me and allowing me to work into my new role," Rahn said. "The men's soccer student-athletes were recruited here to be part of a winning team philosophy and I'm excited to help them reach their goals, both academically and athletically."
The Argos will begin their season next Friday with a home game against Embry Riddle. The game will kick off at 3:00 p.m. MTN.
"We've set high goals for ourselves and will work hard to achieve our potential," he said. "We have the talent and ambition to strive for greatness and will prepare ourselves for our opportunities. We will focus on working hard through the season developing our team with the goal of postseason success."
