GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team will partake in their final non-conference game of the season when they take on the University of Jamestown Saturday afternoon in Billings, Mont. The game will kick off at 2:30 p.m. at Wendy's Field.
The Argos (0-1) will try to rebound from their
loss in the season-opener to Embry-Riddle. The two teams played a fairly even game, but a goal with 12 seconds left in the first half ended up being the deciding goal for the Eagles.
"We're almost to the heart of the season, so we're getting more and more prepared," interim head coach
Michael Rahn said. "The Embry-Riddle game showed us a lot. We're figuring out our personnel and how we're going to use everybody. We're still improving. We still have high hopes."
The game against the Eagles showcased the Argos stout defense. Goalkeeper
Evan Scholes recorded eight saves on nine shots on target from the Eagles, including a save on a penalty kick early in the game.
Joel Samayoa and
Matthew Wilkinson led a great defensive showing on the back line.
However the Argos failed to create many offensive opportunities during the season-opener, so Rahn has spent the past week in practice working on the offensive attack. Though Rahn wants the team to have a defensive identity, he does want to be able to utilize the counter attacks and take advantage of the attacking third.
"We've been working on counter attacking and how we can bring it down to the other team and get more chances," he said. "We need to come up with shots, corners, and fouls in the final third so that we can get some restarts. We really have to find some goals. We have to figure out who is going to score the goals, who is going to set each other up."
The Jimmies (0-1-1) will provide a good test for the Argos. The defense will be tested by forward Diego Valle, who has already recorded two goals and an assist so far on the year.
"They're an up and coming team," Rahn said. "They're scrappy, they fight, they don't give up. They're putting in goals. They have a big roster. It's going to be a good test. We'll see how we respond."
The Argos aren't intimidated however. Rahn said that the team has had a great week of practice, and is motivated to leave Billings with a result.
"We're going in there to get a win," he said. "It's going to be a dogfight there's no doubt. We're looking to improve and get prepared for conference. It's our last test before our conference season starts. I really want to put our best foot forward."
