MISSOULA, Mont. – The University of Providence hockey team scored two goals in the final two minutes to squeeze past the University of Montana in a nail-biter Saturday night in Missoula.
The game remained scoreless all the way until five in the third period, when the Griz scored to take a 1-0 lead. The Argos responded the next line shift with a goal of their own to even it out, but the Griz responded a minute later with another goal to take a 2-1 lead.
"We felt like we were in the box for more than half of the second period," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "We just couldn't get anything going. Getting scored on in the third was a wake-up call, and they went out scored the next shift. All of a sudden guys are realizing that they need to pick it up again."
The team did just that, with
Leo Felt finding the back of the net with 6:16 left to even the score. The team increased their pressure, and got a power play goal from
Liam Carvalho with 1:29 left in the game.
Will Wright scored an empty-net goal forty seconds later to secure the game.
"It was a difficult game," Heimel said. "We just gutted it out. Good teams find a way to win. Despite difficult circumstances, it was one of those moments where we overcame adversity. Things weren't going our way and they figured out a way."
Heimel was quick to point out that goalie
Tristan Lewis, who recorded 32 saves on the evening, was the player of the game.
"Tristan was the star of the game," Heimel said. "The Griz came out working really hard. In moments like that, you need your goalie to be your best player. Tonight he was. He was calm and collected and made everything look easy. He did a really good job positioning us where we could finish the game."
The Argos (10-4) will end the regular season next Thursday in a rematch with the Griz (12-7-1) at the Great Falls Ice Plex in Great Falls, Mont.
