CORVALLIS, Ore. – University of Providence men's wrestler
Payton Hume was named the WVT Laboratory Men's Wrestler of the Week, the Cascade Collegiate Conference
announced on Monday.
Hume, a 174-pound sophomore from Kalispell, Mont, recorded two pins en route to
winning the 174 lb. weight class at the Tyler Plummer Classic in Dickinson, N.D. this past weekend. He posted his first fall in two minutes, 34 seconds and won the title with a pin in two minutes, 24 seconds. Hume also had a 7-4 decision victory on the day.
"He had a great weekend," head coach
Steve Komac said. "He is starting to get back into shape and be physically where he needs to be. He has a lot of ability and a lot of potential."
Hume is recovering from an ACL injury that he suffered two years ago as a member of the University of Mary wrestling program. After transferring to Providence last season, he sat out the entire year to recover. He has spent this season getting back into shape and finding a groove, and that patience paid off on Saturday.
"When he came here he was still recovering," Komac said. "We wanted to be patient with that. It just took a full year to get healthy, feel strong and move fully. It takes a lot to get back to where you want to be."
Hume marks the third Argo to have been named the CCC Men's Wrestler of the Week this season.
Joel Avila received the recognition on Nov. 22, a week after
KC Buday won the award.
"We feel like we have some depth," Komac said. "There's been times where that depth didn't show on paper because of things outside of our control. We have guys in our room that we think are better than people have seen so far. We're getting close to getting that crew to 100 percent."
The Argos will wrestle in their first of four conference duals on Thursday. The squad will take on Vanguard at 5:30 p.m. in Arizona before taking on Embry-Riddle at 7:00 p.m.
