This story has been updated to reflect Alan Badley's selection to the NAIA National Tournament.
HAVRE, Mont. – University of Providence men's wrestler
KC Buday won the conference championship in the heavyweight division at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament in Havre, Mont. on Saturday.
Buday,
the 12th ranked wrestler in the nation, defeated #4 Noel Orozco, who had defeated Buday twice earlier in the season, by a 2-1 decision in the championship match. The win automatically qualifies him for the NAIA National Tournament.
"KC was consistent all weekend long like he has been all season," head coach
Steve Komac said. "His opponent has been ranked in the Top 5 all year. We've been close to him and obviously KC believed in himself. He turned it around tonight and that was exciting."
Hayden Schrull also had a successful showing, finishing second in the 184 lb. weight class. His second-place finish also qualifies him to the NAIA National Championships.
"He's getting better every single weekend," Komac said. "He's an amazing spirit. He loves the sport and loves what he's doing. It shows in his attitude and his effort. He wrestled great today. I'm happy for him."
Jordan Komac and
Joel Avila also qualified for the NAIA National Championships during the tournament. Komac ended the day in 4th place in the 165 lb. weight class while Avila finished 5
th in the 133 lb. weight class.
"The depth of 133 and 165 is insane," Komac said. "Each weight class had six nationally ranked kids in it. Those weights were super, super deep. You have to battle every single round. Nearly every kid you're wrestling in those weight classes is an All-American level kid. Both Joel and Jordan did a great job of battling throughout the weekend. They got themselves qualified in an extremely tough weight class. We're really proud of them. We're still moving forward."
Following the tournament, the CCC coaches voted that
Alan Badley would receive one of the conference's wild card allotments. Badley finished 6th in the 184 lb. weight class.
"Alan's work and success throughout the season garnered him enough votes from the conference coaches to move on," Komac said. "We are very excited to have Alan join his teammates at the National Tournament."
As a team, the Argos finished 6
th with 95.5 points. Eastern Oregon won the event with 130.5 points. Menlo finished second with 123 points, while MSU-Northern finished 3rd with 117.
A total of eight Argos placed at the event.
Caleb Birdwell (141 lbs.),
Dustyn Camacho (285 lbs.) and
Liam Swanson (197 lbs.) all finished 5
th in their respective weight classes while
Alan Badley finished 6
th in the 184 lb. weight class.
"We grew a lot throughout the season," Komac said. "We had a really good day yesterday. We didn't have a bad today. We still have to get that next step. We lost a few overtime matches. You win those and you're the guy that qualifies for Nationals. We have room to grow still."
While the season ends except for the four National Qualifiers, the coaching staff is ecstatic about the amount of growth the team saw this season, and is excited about the future of the team moving forward.
"We don't lose a senior in our whole lineup," Komac said. "We made a lot of gains this year with kids that have more time left in our lineup in the future. If we continue to see the gains that we saw this season, we could be really good next year."
The NAIA National Championships will take place March 6-7 in Wichita, Kansas.
