ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Providence men's hockey team kept their season alive Tuesday night defeating Florida Gulf Coast, the top-seed in the pool, 2-1 in the second game of pool play at the ACHA Division National Tournament.
The win gives the Argos (15-6) a chance to advance out of their pool. After
losing to Iowa State on Monday in the opening game of pool play, the team needed a win against the Eagles (28-5) to keep their hopes alive.
"It was one of those things where we knew we had to win," head coach
Jeff Heimel said. "It was a must-win. We also knew that we had to play on both sides of the puck well. It's conceivably very possible for us to move on. We're excited about that. We got some new life."
Just like yesterday, the Argos got on the board early by scoring two goals in the first period.
Tobias Robinson got the first goal of the game off the dime from
Leo Felt 10 minutes into the first period, while
Jakob Stevenson extended the lead to two four minutes later with a power play goal. No goal was scored until the 15 minute mark of the third period, when the Eagles found the back of the net, but the Argos walled up defensively to prevent the tying goal.
"We played great," Heimel said. "It was a gutsy win. It was a really gritty win. Guys were selling out defensively. It was a solid, solid win. We one-upped how we played from yesterday. That's what you want. You want to get better. We rose to the occasion. Our season was on the line tonight. It's definitely encouraging. We were rallying around each other. It was cool. It was a fun night."
Heimel is especially pleased with goalie
Tristan Lewis, who recorded nine saves on the night.
"Tristan was unbelievable," he said. "He clearly put us on his back tonight. He made some big saves for us."
The Argos will now root for the Eagles to take down the Cyclones in the final game of pool play. If the Cyclones win, they will advance to the Final Four. If the Eagles win, and the Argos defeat Bentley tomorrow, the pool play winner will be decided by a tiebreaker.
For the Argos to even entertain the latter scenario, they know they'll have to defeat the Falcons – a loss to the squad will end their season. The game will begin at 1:45 MTN.
"We know they're physical," Heimel said. "They've had two close games against the pool opponents. They lost to Iowa State in overtime tonight. Florida Gulf Coast beat them 3-1. They know how to defend well. It's going to be tough. They're not overly offensive which could be helpful, but we still have to score goals. It's going to be a tough game."
