Great Falls, Mont. - Daniela Waialeale scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute, but a late Mount Royal (Alberta, Can.) goal lifted the Cougars past Providence in the season opener Saturday at Argo Field. Waialeale's goal neutralized a Jamie Rovere goal 6 minutes earlier before Helen Clee scored unassisted to hand the Argos the loss. Both teams battled through a scoreless first half, thanks to stellar play between the pipes from goalkeepers Elizabeth Knight (MRU) and Providence's Kaitlyn Sisler. Sisler, a senior from West Jordan, Utah stopped a total of 13 shots on the afternoon. Knight stopped all two shots she saw, while Torrance Langdon gave up UP's lone goal on two shots on goal.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Heather Blandford says she is happy with the team's play, "I was very proud of our team today. Mount Royal is a very well coached, well organized, and technically sharp side. We did a great job limiting high percentage shots and committed to the team defending concepts we have been working on in training. We created a number of quality chances and combined well in our attacking third. I am excited for the determination and competitive nature displayed by our team today. We will do big things this year if we continue to make such drastic improvements from game to game."
Defenseman Taylor Ward was credited with the assist on Waialeale's goal. Providence will travel with the Argo men to Helena Thursday for a double header with the Saints. The men open their season at 4 pm with the women's game to follow at 6 pm. Visit www.upargos.com to watch both.
