OGDEN, Utah. – The University of Providence hockey program opened the Beehive Showcase with a 6-2 victory over #4 Weber State Thursday night.
The Argos (6-4) scored the first goal of the contest when senior
Braden Bain dangled around the Weber State (8-8) defender to make it 1-0. Â
The Wildcats would answer with 10 seconds left in the period when a rebound kicked out to a Weber State attacker and his wrist shot from the point tied the game at one.
UP would jump out in front to start the second period when a pass behind the net from freshman
Jamal Kalaf found freshman
Adam Husli whose backhand shot gave the Argos a 2-1 lead.
A minute later the Argos would score again on a two on one advantage when freshman
AJ Belanger found senior
Ty Alger to extend the UP lead to two.
Weber State would threaten halfway through the second period, but freshman
Chris Fines would flash the leather with a glove save to deny the Wildcats.
The Argos would extend their lead to three when freshman
Elliott Venini sent the puck in front of the net and senior
Jakob Stevenson was able to push it past the goaltender.
Weber State would score to cut the lead to two, but Alger would score his second goal of the game when his wrist shot from the slot found the back of the net.
The Argos would add another goal with two minutes left in the game when Chavez Contant's slap shot increased the Argos lead to four. Despite Weber State threatening in the final two minutes, the Argo defense remained strong as UP won the game 6-2.
The Argos will be back in action Nov. 17 when they travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for their matchup versus the University of Utah. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex. Â Â Â
