11/25/2023 2:50:00 PM

BOTTINEAU, N.D. – The University of Providence hockey program defeated #2 Dakota College at Bottineau 4-4 (1-0) in a shootout Saturday afternoon.

The Lumberjacks (8-6) struck first five minutes into the game when a one-timer from DCB found the back of the net.

The Argos (11-4) would have a chance midway through the period when senior Jakob Stevenson intercepted a Lumberjack pass, but his breakaway shot was stopped by the goaltender.

With five minutes left in the first period, freshman Eliott Venini had a clean look, but his wrist shot was unable to get past the Lumberjack defense.

DCB would extend their lead to two when a breakaway opportunity for the Lumberjacks found the back of the net.

A few minutes later, on a UP powerplay, senior Ty Alger took the puck from the point and passed it to Stevenson who found freshman Tobias Robinson in front of the net whose one-timer beat the goaltender to cut the lead in half. The Argos out shot the Lumberjacks 41-24 through two periods.

In the final period, the Lumberjacks would score within the first two minutes, but the Argos would respond on the power play when freshman Adam Husli found the loose puck and beat the goaltender to keep the game within one.

The Lumberjacks would add a power play goal of their own with six minutes remaining, but moments later Stevenson scored off a feed from behind the net to make it 4-3.

UP would pull their goalie in the final minute and Stevenson would score his second goal of the game off a rebound chance to tie the game at four.

Despite being up a man in overtime, the Argos were unable to capitalize sending the game to a shootout.

Following opening misses by both teams, Alger would bury his attempt to put the Argos up 1-0. Freshman Chris Fines would hold strong down the stretch denying all three of the Lumberjacks shots as the Argos defeated #2 DCB 4-4 (1-0). With Stevenson's performance today he is now the #1 all-time leader in career points in Argo Athletics history.

The Argos will be back in action Jan. 19 when they host #12 University of Montana in Great Falls, Mont.  Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Great Falls Ice Plex.
