Argos Split in Day 1 at CSM Labor Day Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The University of Providence volleyball program split in their first day at the CSM Labor Day Classic defeating Mount Mercy 3-1 and losing to #4 Viterbo University 3-1.

Set one against the Mustangs (6-1) was back and forth with neither team gaining a lead by more than three until a kill by junior Mady Hoerner and back-to-back aces by junior Nati Slazynska gave the Argos (7-2) a 14-9 edge. The Argos would score seven of the last nine points to take the first set 25-17. Sophomore Ryann Eddins led the way for UP with four kills in the opening set.

UP started off hot in the second set getting out to an early 7-2 lead. Mount Mercy would respond immediately, winning the next five points to tie it at seven. Both teams would trade runs but neither team could gain an edge of more than three culminating in a tie at 17. The Mustangs would score six of the next nine points to take a late 23-20 lead. The match would be tied at 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28 before the Mustangs won two points in a row to take the second set 30-28.  

Mount Mercy would grab the early lead in the third set bringing it to a 15-10 advantage. The Argos would not go away quietly and tied it up at 22 after three straight kills by junior Nina Janjic. UP would win three of the next four points to take the third set 25-23. Janjic led the way for UP with six kills in the third.

The fourth set was back and forth with seven ties before a kill by senior Zoe Naugle and a block by Hoerner and Naugle gave the Argos a 18-16 lead. The match would have six more ties before an ace by junior Taylor Christensen and back-to-back kills by Janjic closed out the Mustangs 26-24.

Janjic led the way for the Argos with 17 kills in their 3-1 victory over Mount Mercy University. Slazynska had 26 assists and 22 digs and redshirt freshman Cabry Taylor added seven total blocks as well.

The second match of the day against #4 Viterbo (8-2) saw the Argos get out to an early 4-1 lead behind three kills by Janjic. The V-Hawks would answer to take a 15-11 lead and continued to pull away from UP to win the first set 25-18.

In the second set neither team could gain an edge until Viterbo scored five of six points to take an 11-7 lead. The Argos would answer back by winning seven of the next eight points to retake the lead 14-12. There would be five ties until the V-Hawks took a 22-19 lead, but back-to-back blocks by Naugle and Janjic tied it up at 22. The match would see three more ties before Taylor had two blocks in a row with Janjic and Eddins to take the second set 28-26.

The third set saw Viterbo get out to an early 8-2 lead and they would keep that cushion throughout taking the set 25-19.

The fourth set started the same as the third with Viterbo jumping out to a 7-3 lead. Despite the Argos making a few runs to get within one, the V-Hawks pulled away in the end to take the set 25-15.

The Argos are back in action tomorrow with two matches at the United Sports Academy. The first match is against #3 Northwestern College at Noon and game two versus the College of Saint Mary begins at 6:00 p.m.
